Derek Bailey, Improvisation: Its Nature and Practice in Music should be required reading for all musicians, if not all humans. A truly humanistic approach to music-making by one of the most accomplished players and musical thinkers living. A guitarist, Bailey's "non-idiomatic" improvisation (he *was* a Jazz player) is the single most interesting musical development since Coltrane, in my book.
