A rather sneering review of Eggers' rather sneering "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." I haven't read it. I like McSweeney's on occasion, but mainly because its editorial tone is so different. I have a hunch that that's where Eggers' greatest strength lies: editorial. His writers assume his unique style so effortlessly (or so it seems) that I can't help but assume he has a major editorial hand in it.
Excerpt:
Eggers's sister Beth argues, in interviews, that her brother exaggerates his role as guardian and unfairly deprecates her own contribution. See "Et tu Beth?" Harper's, August 2000, p. 23.
