Short but illuminating Coltrane/Dolphy Interview. It's a "classic" article from 1962 and, while it doesn't go in-depth (at all), it is evidently the source of the "Eric Dolphy plays with the birds" anecdote so often referenced. (it's funny to think of someone being so bilious about musicians of such high caliber playing what they want to play. It's an attitude I can't understand. The new question, to me, is: is it okay or useful for a musician of LOW caliber to play what they want to play? I don't mean mediocre musicians because, while they can't match the skill of other players of their milieu, they are still schooled, trained, talented musicians without a doubt. I mean more like children or The Shaggs or something. Or me.) [link via Apathy]
