He [Andrew Cyrille] pioneered what he calls "conversational rhythms," rhythms that come from patterns of speech. "I don't ever recall saying to myself 'I'm going to play like ... [Sunny Murray, Milford Graves]. I just did what I thought was right at the time, playing what I call 'conversational rhythms.' We don't talk in 4/4 time or 3/4 or 6/8 or 7/4, we just talk.
