I've been listening to Bill Dixon and also read his book: L'Opera. The recordings I've heard are few: Son of Sysyphus and Dixon in Italy. I've also heard him on a couple of Tony Oxley recordings (Celebration Orchestra and Quartet, I believe), which are astonishing and beautiful. He is a ridiculously virtuosic trumpeter and and composer and an astute thinker about this music. Recent article about Mr. Dixon.
