Recently turned on, by JP, to the work of Alfred Schnittke, a Russian composer who died in 1998. His work eludes me, to a large degree, but I find what I've heard so far to be rather alien and very very affecting. He's not at all afraid of dramatic dynamic shifts, lulling the listener into passivity only to puncture the bubble of calm with some kind of Space Chord...
